Big Ten Awards Weekly Honors to Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota

Player of the Week:
Ward claims her first Big Ten Player of the Week distinction after helping No. 9 Illinois to a 2-0 conference mark with weekend wins over Penn State and Ohio State to start Big Ten action. The junior recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs in a five-set win against No. 2 Penn State, ending the Nittany Lions’ 65-match conference winning streak. She followed that effort with 14 kills on .444 hitting and eight digs against Ohio State to finish with weekend averages of 3.8 kills and 2.3 digs per set.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Zimmerman wins her second career weekly honor after guiding the No. 22 Wolverines to a pair of wins during the opening weekend of Big Ten play. By posting 11 digs against Iowa and a season-high 21 versus No. 14 Minnesota, the senior averaged 4.0 digs per set as the Wolverines held their opponents to .196 hitting over the weekend. Zimmerman also became Michigan’s all-time leader in assists in Michigan’s match against Iowa, finishing with 36 helpers. She added 60 in a five-set win over Minnesota on Saturday to bring her career total to 5,144.

Freshman of the Week:
Wittman claims her third Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor after hitting .444 and finishing with 2.8 digs per set in No. 14 Minnesota’s weekend split. The freshman finished with a double-double against No. 22 Michigan, tallying 16 kills and 17 digs in a five-set defeat. Against Michigan State on Friday, Wittman finished with 10 kills on .529 hitting and added three blocks in the Gophers’ three-set win.
