Northwestern's Gardner and Penn State's Fawcett Earn POW Honors
Nov. 14, 2005
PLAYER OF THE WEEK Fawcett posted match-high kill totals both nights last week as the No. 3 Nittany Lions swept two more conference opponents to improve to 16-0 in league play and clinch the outright Big Ten title. At No. 14 Purdue, the freshman posted 14 kills on .321 hitting with seven digs and four blocks. The following night at Illinois, Fawcett was on fire, posting 12 kills on an errorless 21 swings to hit .571 with one ace, five digs and two blocks, including one solo effort. For the weekend, Fawcett averaged 4.33 kills per game on .429 hitting with 2.00 digs per game and 1.00 blocks per game. This is the second career weekly honor for Fawcett, as she was honored on Sept. 26 of this year. Last PSU POW: Cassy Salyer (10/31/05) DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Gardner repeats as Defensive Player of the Week after sharing the honor with Minnesota's Paula Gentil. The NU senior has now broken a school record for digs in four of the last five matches. Last Friday at No. 17 Minnesota, Gardner broke the NU single-match record -- which she set just last week -- with 37 digs. She bested her Co-Defensive Player of the Week, Paula Gentil, by eight digs in helping the Wildcats to their first win in Minneapolis since 1990. On Saturday she added 23 digs to hold Iowa to just a .015 team hitting percentage in a three-game NU sweep. The 23 digs gave Gardner 464 for the year, breaking her own NU single-season record of 460 set last year. On the weekend, Gardner made just one reception error in 61 attempts and helped Northwestern to its first four-match winning streak in league play since 1988. Last NU DPOW: Christie Gardner (11/7/05)
