Big Ten and FSN Chicago Announce Volleyball Wildcard Selection
Nov. 16, 2004
PARK RIDGE, IL - The Minnesota at Illinois volleyball match to be played on Friday, November 26, will be televised by FSN Chicago as the wildcard selection, it was announced by League officials Tuesday. The match will be the 11th and final regular season televised Conference volleyball match of the season.
No. 5 Minnesota is currently 24-4 overall and tied for third in the Big Ten with a 13-3 record. The Golden Gophers spent three weeks as the nation's top-ranked team earlier this season, which marked the first time in school history Minnesota had ever received the No. 1 ranking. Illinois, which has been ranked as high as ninth this season, boasts an 18-7 overall record and is currently fifth in the League at 10-6.
The outcome of the match could possibly determine whether or not Minnesota will win or share the 2004 Conference title. The Gophers are currently one match behind Ohio State and Penn State, who are tied for first in the League standings. The scenario would be fitting as the Fighting Illini have become known for hosting nationally recognized matches. On October 23, Illinois upset then-No. 7 Ohio State, 3-0, in Champaign, snapping the Buckeyes' 19-match winning streak. Earlier this year, the Illini also upset two-time defending national champion and then-No. 1 USC, ending the Women of Troy's 52-match winning streak. This year marks the first time since 1995 that Illinois has defeated two Top 10 teams in the same season. Two weeks ago, Illinois swept Wisconsin -- a team that entered the November 5th match a winner of eight straight and was coming off a 3-2 upset of then-No. 2 Minnesota.
First serve of the November 26th match is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT. The match will air on a tape-delayed basis on Sunday, November 28 at 1 p.m. CT.
