Indiana and Michigan State Win Final Volleyball Player of the Week Honors

Player of the Week: Benson records Player of the Week honors for the second time this season after guiding the Hoosiers to wins over No. 10 Illinois and Wisconsin over the weekend. The senior middle blocker averaged 3.9 kills, 2.1 blocks and 1.0 digs per set in the two matches as the Hoosiers sealed a berth to the NCAA Championship. Against the Illini, Benson finished with 18 kills, six stuffs and four digs in the four-set win, then filled the stat sheet against Wisconsin with nine kills, nine blocks and three digs in the sweep of the Badgers. She attacked at a .431 clip to help Indiana advance to the postseason for the first time since 2002. Last Indiana Player of the Week: Jordan Haverly (Nov. 8, 2010) Defensive Player and Freshman of the Week: Mathews was named Big Ten Defensive Player and Freshman of the Week after posting 2.1 blocks per set and helping Michigan State to a pair of wins against No. 19 Michigan and Northwestern last weekend. In the Spartans’ win over Michigan, the freshman finished with 12 swats – the second-most in a three-set match in the Big Ten this season – and added 10 kills in a sweep of the Spartans’ in-state rival. Against Northwestern, who was receiving votes in last week’s rankings, Mathews added five blocks, bringing her weekly total to 17 stuffs as Michigan State held its opponents to .158 hitting on the week.
