Two Big Ten women’s volleyball teams advanced to the 2013 NCAA Championship semifinals which will be hosted by the University of Washington Dec. 19-21 in Seattle, Wash. Penn State and Wisconsin will take part in the tournament’s Final Four, marking the second year in a row that two Big Ten teams will participate in the national semifinals.
The second-seeded Nittany Lions are headed to the NCAA semifinals for the second consecutive season and sixth time in the last seven years after defeating seventh-seeded Stanford, 3-2, on Saturday. Ariel Scott led the offense with 22 kills, while Deja McClendon recorded 21 kills on .316 hitting. Penn State will face the winner of Saturday night’s Washington-USC match.
The Badgers are making their second appearance in the national semifinals after defeating Big Ten foe Purdue, 3-1, in the regional final. Wisconsin was led by Deme Morales and Ellen Chapman who tallied 20 and 19 kills, respectively. Annemarie Hickey totaled 23 digs, while Dominique Thompson added four blocks. The 12th-seeded Badgers will face top-seeded Texas in the national semifinal.
The NCAA Tournament semifinals will be held Thursday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. ET and 9:30 p.m. ET, while the championship match is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 21 at 9:30 p.m. ET. All matches will be televised on ESPN2.
