Wisconsin Men, Michigan Women Lead The Way At 2003 NCAA Championships

Park Ridge, IL - The Wisconsin men's cross country squad finished second in the 2003 NCAA Championships on Monday, the top showing among the 10 Conference squads that competed in the meet. The Stanford Cardinal swept both the men's and the women's titles at the Championship, which was held in Waterloo, Iowa, and hosted by the University of Northern Iowa.

Wisconsin earned runner-up honors on the men's side for the second-consecutive year. The Badgers' Simon Bairu, the 2003 Big Ten champion and Athlete of the Year, was the top individual finisher for the Conference, crossing the line in ninth place overall. Wisconsin's Chris Solinsky (15th), Michigan's Nathan Brannen (17th) and Nick Willis (18th) and Indiana's Sean Jefferson (19th) were also among the top-20 individual finishers. The Big Ten had three additional squads among the top 15 as Michigan captured ninth, Indiana finished 12th and Ohio State was 15th. Minnesota rounded out the Conference contingent in 26th place.

On the women's side, Michigan took fourth place overall to record the program's best NCAA finish since 1994, when the Wolverines took runner-up honors. Michigan State was 17th, followed by Penn State (23rd), Wisconsin (26th) and Indiana (27th). The Spartans' Michelle Carson, the 2002 Big Ten individual champion, was the League's top finisher in 12th place overall. Michigan's Rebecca Walter, the 2003 League champion and Athlete of the Year, finished 18th overall to lead the Wolverines.
