Six women's cross country teams will be in action this weekend to open the 2007 season. Two schools will run on their own courses. Illinois hosts the Illini Open on Friday, while Iowa travels to Western Illinois. Michigan State will travel to Central Michigan and Penn State to the Lock Haven Invitational on Friday. Indiana hosts the Indiana Community 5K Saturday, and Northwestern will travel to UIC to open its season.
In 2006, a pair of conference teams finished in the top five nationally for the first time in history, while three Big Ten squads placed in the top 10 for the second-straight year and just the second time since 1994. Michigan (233 points) finished third, followed by Wisconsin (262) in fourth and Illinois (304) in eighth. Minnesota (335) and Michigan State (358) placed just outside the top 10 in 11th and 12th, respectively, while Iowa (409) finished 17th.
