PARK RIDGE, Ill. - The 2010 Big Ten women's cross country season begins this weekend, as eight of 11 conference teams compete in their first meets of the season on Friday.
Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Purdue and Wisconsin welcome competitors to their home courses to open the season with the Illini Challenge, Hawkeye Invitational, Michigan Open, Great American Legends and Wisconsin Classic all taking place on Friday. Northwestern joins the Badgers at the Wisconsin Classic, while Michigan State competes in the Jeff Drenth Memorial in Mount Pleasant, Mich., and Penn State travels to Lock Haven, Pa., for the Lock Haven Dolan Duals.
Minnesota and Indiana open their 2010 slates next weekend, as the Gophers host the Oz Memorial Run on Sept. 10, and the Hoosiers host the Indiana Open on Sept. 11. Ohio State begins the season at the Appalachian State Mountaineer Open in Boone, N.C., on Sept. 17.
Six Big Ten teams finished in the top 30 at the 2009 NCAA Championships, with Minnesota leading the way in 10th place. Illinois, led by individual NCAA Champion Angela Bizzarri, finished in a tie for 11th, while Big Ten Champion Penn State landed in 14th, Michigan State took 26th, Michigan earned 27th, and Ohio State placed in 29th.
