The Big Ten Women’s Cross Country Championships are set for this weekend, with all 12 conference teams competing for the Big Ten title at the Michigan State University Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich., on Sunday. The 6,000-meter race is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. ET.
Michigan enters the weekend with the highest national ranking of the conference squads at No. 7. The Wolverines, led by 2011 first-team All-Big Ten honoree Rebecca Addison, return seven runners who competed in last year’s championships.
Penn State follows Michigan in the poll at No. 13. The Nittany Lions return seven competitors from their 2011 lineup, including All-Big Ten honoree Emily Giannotti.
Defending Big Ten champion Michigan State enters the weekend ranked 15th nationally, returning six of its runners from a season ago. All-Big Ten performers Julia Otwell and Sara Kroll headline the Spartan lineup after finishing sixth and eighth, respectively, in 2011.
Minnesota, ranked 25th, rounds out the group of ranked Big Ten teams heading into the championships. The Golden Gophers return six of their top seven runners from last year’s meet.
Wisconsin is led by Ashley Beutler and 2011 Co-Freshman of the Year Gabi Anzalone, while Indiana welcomes back its top-two finishers, Samantha Ginther and Caitlin Engel, from last season’s championships. Iowa enters the meet led by Kayla Beattie and Mareike Schrulle, who earned Athlete of the Week honors this season.
Nebraska enters the meet with four runners from last year’s championships roster, while Northwestern is led by All-Big Ten honoree Audrey Huth. Six runners from last season’s lineup return for Ohio State, including the Buckeyes top finisher, Tori Brink. Purdue returns four competitors, while Illinois welcomes back five harriers from last season’s event.
