Dream Big Profile: Betsy Eiserman

Some things did change from last year. The team started more veterans, and the injuries that plagued the team don't exist this year. Eiserman attributes the team's winning success to a change in attitude. "We are all having more fun," said Eiserman, a speech communication major. "There was so much adversity last season that it was really hard to stay positive and enjoy ourselves."

In addition to emphasizing injury prevention and staying healthy, the team and staff worked on keeping the environment in the gym more positive and upbeat. "It is easier to play well when you are having fun."

In becoming one of the top setters in the Big Ten Conference, Eiserman has had to sharpen her leadership skills over the years to be a more complete player. "The setter is the only player who touches the ball in every play. She is the one the team looks to for advice or guidance," she says. This leadership role, combined with her ability to be aware of what's happening with her team and her opponent, made the Lake Bluff, Illinois, resident, a two-time all-state selection at setter by the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette and Chicago Tribune.

Eiserman has learned a lot in her three years at Illinois. The learning curve continues next season as the Fighting Illini try to improve on their successful formula. "Being involved in sports has given me great self-confidence. Not only that, but it also has taught me how to interact with many people, coaches, teammates and opponents," she says. "I have worked with many different people, and I have learned so much from that experience."
