Wisconsin - Swimming & Diving - 1979-1983

Being a member of the University Of Wisconsin-Madison varsity swimming team was an experience that will always be with me and will be passed on to my children and hopefully their children.

I came to realize how important it was to have academics and sports as a part of my life. Being involved in swimming in the Big Ten not only gave me the opportunity to attend a school where I could obtain a great education, but also to become part of an "extended family." Being a part of a sports team is an excellent way to meet new people. It also encourages sportsmanship, dedication, commitment, time management, leadership and teamwork. All of these are important skills and qualities once you begin your life in the "real world."

My most memorable competition was the Big Ten Championships my freshman year. I swam several events, but the most memorable was swimming in the 100 butterfly against some very talented women. I had challenged these women at times throughout the season and each of us had taken turns beating each other. Although I finished third in the Big Ten Championships in this event, there was less than three-tenths of a second separating the top three finishers. What an exciting race! I went on to win the most valuable player award for UW-Madison varsity swimming that year, which will always remain my most special accomplishment. I made some wonderful friendships through swimming and stayed in contact with these people well beyond school - even with athletes I'd met from other schools. I hope that someday my boys will be able to experience similar achievements and memories as I did as a Big Ten athlete.
