As a top-ranked softball player at Purdue University, Jesse Jones is no stranger to a challenge. Her hard work and dedication to the sport have helped her become the athlete she is today.

A junior from Indianapolis, Ind., Jones began her career at Purdue as a first-time third baseman. Of the position she says, " Coming into college, the catch position was the only position I had played so third base was a new and very challenging experience." Jones certainly accepted the challenge, and her 184 assists through 2001 assured her place on the infield. Jones credits Olympic softball player, Michelle Venturella for many of her accomplishments. Jones says, "Michelle was a major influence on me in high school where she worked as a hitting coach. She is a good friend and mentor."

Jones' demonstration of leadership on the field is immeasurable. "Our team goals are to win the Big Ten season and tourney and to go on to the regionals... if my team succeeds, I succeed." Jones has demonstrated leadership this year by accepting the position of catcher for a teammate who is out this season due to an injury. "The most challenging part was relearning the position. In my mind I pictured myself the way I used to play, but coming back into the position, I found that my technique was quite rusty." Jones' devotion to the sport keeps her striving for her goal; however, her progress is steady.

Jones is a communications major with a focus in public relations. She hopes to get her master's degree while coaching softball at the collegiate level. "Playing sports has brought so much joy and valuable experience to my life, but the experience of being part of a team can't be learned any other way," she explains, "You dream big by listening to your heart, and making the impossible possible."
