Jill Stewart One of my most memorable moments as a Big Ten soccer athlete was when we (Wisconsin) played the University of Minnesota in one of the first rounds of the NCAA tournament in the freezing cold, sleet and snow at home at the McClimon Track/Soccer Complex in mid-November. Many of the parents pitched in that frigid morning to shovel the mounds of snow and ice off of the field. It was almost comical. We could not even see the grass let alone the lines on the field. As we prepared for the game, players were creating insulated cleats with plastic baggies and smearing Vaseline all over our faces so we would not chap them. We were all bundled up from head to toe, but making sure our jerseys and shorts were the last layers to put on our bodies. It was by far the coldest soccer game I have ever played in. We ended up defeating the Gophers and advancing on to the next round of NCAA play. That made the bone-chilling game all worth while. |
