Iowa Field Hockey

En route to the 1986 NCAA Championship, the Iowa field hockey team won 19 of the 22 games it played, outscored its opponents, 69-10, and recorded 13 shutouts.  In the regular-season alone, the Hawkeyes owned a 63-8 scoring advantage, claimed their first outright Big Ten title in three seasons and a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament.  All year long, Iowa was sparked by the unbridled enthusiasm of eight exceptionally talented freshmen, but saw veteran leadership shine in the postseason.

In the NCAA regional final, junior Liz Tchou scored with just more than six minutes left to play to give Iowa a 2-1 victory over Northwestern and a date with Penn State in the national semifinals.  Against the Nittany Lions, Iowa senior RosAnna Salcido netted the final goal of her collegiate career, while junior Karen Napolitano registered her 12th shutout of the season in the Hawkeyes' 2-0 win.  In the NCAA Championship game, Iowa senior Patti Wanner, the team's captain and one of four UI standouts named to the NCAA All-Tournament team, led the Hawkeyes by scoring both of their goals in a 2-1 double-overtime win over New Hampshire.

Seven Hawkeyes were named to the postseason All-Big Ten teams, while eight were awarded All-America status.
