Indiana Women's Tennis
From the inception of Big Ten women's tennis in 1981-82 until the mid-1990s, Indiana ruled the conference courts, capturing an impressive 12 of the first 15 league championships. Under the guidance of legendary head coach Lin Loring, who remains the Hoosiers' mentor today, IU took the first three Big Ten titles, before yielding to Northwestern in 1985 and 1986. The Hoosiers regained their throne in 1987 when they earned their fourth overall conference championship and first in a string of nine consecutive. Indiana's near-decade worth of league titles from 1987-95 mark the second-longest streak in any sport in Big Ten women's athletics history. Only Michigan's women's swimming and diving program had a longer span of wins (12). At the beginning of the Hoosiers' run, IU captured the 1982 AIAW national championship over Cal-Berkeley and boasted Heather Crowe as the first female Indiana athlete to win a national title when she earned the AIAW singles crown. From 1982-95, the Hoosiers produced 13 All-Americans, including three-time honorees Stephanie Reece (1989-91-93) and Deborah Edelman (1991-92-93), and two-time selection Kelly Mulvihill (1987-89). Reece and Edelman, who were tabbed Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 1989 and 1990, respectively, were runners-up in double competition at the 1990 ITA All-American Championships. Two years prior, Reece teamed with Mulvihill to claim the 1988 doubles title, while Shawn Foltz was crowned the ITA National Clay Courts champion. Loring, a four-time Big Ten (1982-88-92-95) and two-time National (1982-92) Coach of the Year during the span, was responsible for guiding the Hoosiers to a total of 10 NCAA Championship appearances and nine straight trips from 1987-95. In addition, Loring also mentored seven conference Player of the Year selections, including Mulvihill (1988-89), Edelman (1990-92), Reece (1991-92) and Jody Yin (1994), who became the third-straight Hoosier to claim league Freshman of the Year accolades in 1991. Of the 54 All-Big Ten honors during the dynasty, 44 were first-team All-Conference selections, including six women who finished their careers on the first team all four seasons: Reka Monoki (1985-86-87-88), Mulvilhill (1986-87-88-89), Candy Kopetski (1987-88-89-90), Reece (1989-90-91-92), Edelman (1990-91-92-93) and Yin (1991-92-93-94). Off the court, Indiana excelled in the classroom as a total of 30 Hoosiers were named Academic All-Big Ten during the 14-year span.
