Michigan Women's Gymnastics
A perennial force on the national scene, Michigan gymnastics has dominated the Big Ten over the past 15 years. Legendary head coach Bev Plocki is at the helm of one of just five programs in the country to advance to the last 13 NCAA Championships, while dominating the Big Ten with 13 conference crowns over the last 15 seasons. The eight-time Big Ten Coach of the Year, four-time NCAA Regional Coach of the Year and the 1994 NCAA National Coach of the Year has led Michigan to six NCAA regional titles and has taken the Wolverines to No. 2 in the nation twice at the NCAA Championships and added 13 top-10 finishes. After inheriting a program in 1990 that placed no higher than fifth in the Big Ten, Plocki's Wolverines captured a Big Ten record seven-straight conference titles from 1999-2005, won six of last 10 NCAA Regional crowns from and secured 113 NCAA All-America honors and six NCAA individual titles. Thirteen-time All-American Elise Ray became the program's first national champion in the all-around during her freshman campaign in 2001, helping her squad take third at the NCAA Championships. And with titles on the balance beam (2002) and uneven bars (2004), she was the second Michigan gymnast to win three individual crowns. Beth Wymer, a seven-time first-team All-American, was the first to accomplish the feat when she won three-consecutive championships on the uneven bars from 1993-95. Sarah Cain earned seven All-America honors in five different events over her career, while Wendy Marshall (1993-1996) and Nikki Peters (1996-99) earned six honors and Heather Kabnick (1995-98) and Calli Ryals (2001-04) each earned five first-team awards. Seven Wolverines earned Freshman of the Year awards between 1992 and 2005, which is equal to the number of Gymnast of the Year awards at Michigan over that span. Wymer leads the way with three Gymnast of the Year honors (1992, 1994 and 1995) with Sarah Cain picking up two (1997 and 2000). Overall, 26 UM student-athletes combined to earn 67 All-Big Ten first-team honors during the span, nearly twice as many honors as their closest competitor over the span. In the classroom, 85 Michigan gymnasts earned Academic All-Big Ten honors during the era.
