Defending national champion Northwestern asserted its dominance in a clash of conference unbeatens, while top-ranked Maryland continued its flawless run in College Park.
It all leads to the biggest matchup of the year this Thursday.
‘Cats Top Cream & Crimson to Remain Cream of the Crop
A battle between two of the Big Ten’s three conference unbeatens went the way of No. 2 Northwestern on Friday, as the Wildcats pulled away for a 4–1 victory over No. 11 Indiana in Bloomington to maintain a hold of first place.
Bouncing back in dominant fashion from their first setback of the season against No. 10 Princeton, the Wildcats (5–0 Big Ten) broke open a 1–1 deadlock with three unanswered goals. As they have all autumn, star duo Ashley Sessa and Ilse Tromp sparked the offensive surge — Sessa notched her 12th goal of the campaign, while Tromp delivered a two-goal performance to raise her tally to 11.
While the offense did what it usually does, the Wildcats defense delivered the same results, stifling the Hoosiers in the second half. In the final two quarters, Northwestern held Indiana to just one shot while having eight of its own. More from the Wildcats.
Top-Ranked Terps Keep Rolling
After leaping to the top spot in the NFHCA Field Hockey Poll, No. 1 Maryland continued its winning ways, defeating Michigan State and Ohio State in College Park behind identical 4-0 victories.
The star of the weekend was goalie Alyssa Klebasko, who helped pick up the team's seventh and eighth shutouts of the season. On offense, Madeline Vasilios recorded the first multi-goal game of her career on Friday; then, on Sunday, it was leading goal scorers Francisca Eschoyez and Babs Van Hest both finding the back of the net before the Buckeyes tallied a shot.
With the two wins, Maryland improved to 14-0 for the fourth time in program history (5-0 Big Ten). That leads us to this week, where the conference’s two titans finally meet.
The B1G-gest Game Yet: No. 1 Terps Visit No. 2 Wildcats
A week after the Terps passed the Wildcats for the top spot in the poll, No. 1 Maryland and No. 2 Northwestern are finally set to meet in Evanston for the most anticipated field hockey matchup of the season on Thursday. The two have a combined record of 28-1 and 10-0 in the Big Ten, and the winner will be in the driver’s seat the rest of the way.
Northwestern and Maryland are the conference's best statistically, with the Wildcats scoring 50 goals (first) to the Terrapins’ 49 (second) while being tied for first with only 10 goals allowed. We’ll see two of the nation’s best attacking duos go against each other in Maryland’s Eschoyez and Van Hest against Northwestern’s Sessa and Tromp. All four players rank in the top 10 of the conference in goals scored and have been powering their teams up to this point.
In net, two of the conference’s top goalkeepers face off in Maryland’s Klebasko and Northwestern’s Juliana Boon. Boon leads the conference with a 0.61 goals against average, with Klebasko right behind her at 0.65.
With equal parts elite firepower and suffocating defense, this heavyweight tilt comes down to execution in the tightest moments. Whichever star tandem can break through in the circle — or whichever netminder makes the decisive late save — will claim sole possession of first place and full control of the Big Ten title race.
All of the season, and conference play, has led to this game with the 2026 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament Presented by Allstate almost here. Tune in Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network.
