Wildcats Refuse to Lose against Top-Ranked Terps

‘Cats’ pivotal conference victory sets up title-clinching game on Sunday

Thursday night’s battle between the top two teams in the country lived up to the billing, with both heavyweights trading blows throughout the contest. To the victor went a chance to clinch the Big Ten crown on Sunday.

Bent-Cole Leads Wildcats’ Comeback

In a performance reminiscent of last year’s NCAA Semifinal and Championship games, No. 2 Northwestern worked its fourth-quarter magic to beat undefeated No. 1 Maryland 4-2.

Ella Beach kicked off the scoring for Maryland with a goal in the 12th minute off a penalty corner. Shortly thereafter, the Olivia Bent-Cole show started, tying things up in the final minute of the first quarter when she found the back corner of the goal. The Terps got the lead back before halftime thanks to Jordyn Hollamon’s seventh goal of the season.

The lead lasted into the fourth quarter but then Bent-Cole and the Wildcats demonstrated the clutch play that’s made them back-to-back national champions. Despite not recording a shot in the second and third quarters, Northwestern took eight in the fourth. Bent-Cole again tied the match with her second goal in the opening minute of the fourth frame. Six minutes later, she notched the hat trick on a penalty corner to put the Wildcats in front for the first time (and for good).

Sol Martinez sealed the victory with an insurance goal in the final five minutes, leaving Northwestern alone at the top of the Big Ten standings at 6-0. More from Evanston.

Northwestern returns to action on Sunday with a chance to claim its fourth Big Ten Championship in a row. With a victory over Rutgers on Sunday (1 p.m. ET on B1G+), the ‘Cats can earn at least a share of the title. They can also clinch a share without winning Sunday if Maryland, Indiana and Penn State all lose once this weekend. To clinch the championship outright, Northwestern would need to win and have those three squads lose once this weekend.

Crucial Weekends for Penn State and Indiana

Outside of the championship race, there is still plenty to play for as we approach the 2026 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament Presented by Allstate. No. 13 Indiana and No. 19 Penn State – both tied in the standings at 4-1 – will square off on Friday afternoon in Bloomington with the winner moving into a second-place tie (at least temporarily) with Maryland. The Nittany Lions have been on a tear, winning seven straight including four conference matchups, while the Hoosiers look to bounce back from their first loss in the last month against Northwestern. A crucial question in this tilt: can Sadie Canelli (second in B1G with a 0.83 GAA) and the Indiana defense slow down leading Penn State goal scorer Ella Gaitan? Gaitan leads Penn State with 11 tallies and scored both of the team’s goals in last week’s triumph over Michigan.

After the head-to-head matchup on Friday, both squads will take on other ranked foes. Penn State will hit the road to take on No. 6 Iowa and its high-powered offense, while Indiana faces a Maryland team looking to avenge its first loss of the year.
